INTRODUCTORY LEVEL COURSE
Practical Aspects of Petroleum Geochemistry
for Conventional and Resource Plays
This introductory course can be tailored to students with either 1) a minimal background in applied petroleum geochemistry, or 2) a working familiarity with source rock and fluid analyses. In the latter case, instructors would go directly to sampling, analytical, and interpretation caveats and, most importantly, pitfalls. We have often presented this course in a 2-day format:

Day One — covers the background topics summarized below.

Day Two — integrates these background discussions with GeoMark-generated client reports and ancillary data. This results in a real-time integration (and perhaps reinterpretation) of our previous work within the geological and geophysical context of the specific use case.

Source Rock Evaluation
Quantity, quality, and thermal maturity of organic matter to predict hydrocarbon type(s) and yield
COURSE CONTENT
- Brief review of organic material productivity and preservation, depositional environments, and resulting kerogen types
- Sampling considerations, usage, and pitfalls of TOC/Rock-Eval™/HAWK™/visual kerogen/Ro
Crude Oil Geochemistry & Correlation
- Liquid chromatography (including SARA), gas chromatography,
- GC-MS, GC-MSMS (aka QQQ), and stable carbon isotopes
- Cluster analysis/principal components analysis to identify oil families, petroleum systems, and source-reservoir relationships
Natural Gas Geochemistry
- Molecular composition vs. carbon isotopes
- GC-MS, GC-MSMS (aka QQQ), and stable carbon isotopes
- GC-MS, GC-MSMS (aka QQQ), and stable carbon isotopes
- Cluster analysis/principal components analysis to identify oil families, petroleum systems, and source-reservoir relationships
Integration of Rock, Oil and Gas Geochemical Data
- Utility of diamondoids and carotenoids in complementing more standard data
- Identification of subtle migration and HC alteration events
- The Petroleum System in 4 dimensions
- Geochemical parameters required for successful unconventional and conventional resource plays

PVT Module
Integration with Production Engineering
Basic concepts, including:
- Phase equilibria, bubble point, dew point, and multi-phase flow in reservoirs
- Degree of undersaturation and reservoir management considerations
- Use of petroleum geochemistry to derive PVT relationships across a region
Petrophysics
- Summary of applications for multiple, common well log types (e.g. gamma ray, spectral gamma ray, resistivity, density and neutron porosity wireline logs) for deterministic lithology, porosity, and fluid saturation evaluation.
- Brief introduction to appropriate models for sandstone, shaly sand and carbonate lithologies and their challenges
- Application to resource plays and integration with petroleum geochemistry
